Chapelle de St Martin du Froid

Saint Martin du Froid

Take to the heights at Saint Martin du Froid

In Haut-Languedoc, you have surely already tasted our local products, visited our sites, or enjoyed a walk in the forest... But have you looked at our territory from a different perspective... and a little higher up?
In Cambon-et-Salvergues, the highest municipality in the Hérault department, a little gem is hidden: Saint-Martin-du-Froid! You can access it from Salvergues via the hamlet of la Calmette, the forest road of the ridges, or the Saint-Martin path in the Crouzet forest. At the summit, the landscapes are breathtaking. Let yourself be surprised by this 360° view. The chapel, located on the Espinouse plateau, at over 1000m of altitude, overlooks the Orb and Jaur valleys... and in the distance, the Mediterranean Sea!

The Saint Martin du Froid chapel

Built a long time ago in this place, the chapel was meant to serve as a beacon and a refuge in winter, in the snow or fog. It has always been a place of worship: tombs attest to the antiquity of the site and its connection with the dead. A Merovingian sarcophagus was found there and is still installed in the Chapel.

Each year, on the first Thursday of August, a popular pilgrimage is organized to climb to the Chapel and enjoy this unique place together.
