During an internship in Scotland following his training at the shepherd school of Rambouillet, Jean-Marie Welch discovered the extensive livestock system, which relies entirely on the use of pastureland, without buildings and without machinery.

In 1978, he settled as a sheep farmer in the Somail massif, on abandoned land. He later shifted towards Galloway cattle production, grazing on 240 hectares of heathland (heather moorland, gorse scrub and peat bogs). The animals live outdoors all year round, with natural resources making up almost all of their diet.

In 2007, he diversified the farm with outdoor pig production, initially based on Gascon and Mangalitza pigs, on 47 hectares.

In 2016, the GAEC des Hautes Landes was established with his daughter Marion. Today, the farm covers 350 hectares. Always committed to Quality and Innovation, new breeds have joined the herd: Basque and Corsican breeding pigs, and Aberdeen Angus cattle alongside the existing herd.
