Symbol of Lacaune, the Fontaine des Pisseurs intrigues with its four bronze figures and its water reputed for diuretic properties. A unique historical monument in France, between legend and tradition.

In the heart of Place du Griffoul stands the most famous fountain of Lacaune: the Fontaine des Pisseurs. Completed in 1559, it recalls an unusual episode: the inhabitants of Lacaune paid 300 gold écus to free Jacques II de Bourbon, held prisoner at the Battle of Nicopolis. In gratitude, the consuls obtained the right to bring the waters of the Téron to the square.
Listed as a Historical Monument since 1913, the fountain fascinates with its décor: four slightly irreverent bronze characters let water flow into a polygonal basin, before it gushes from medieval monster heads. Symbol of the four seasons, the ages of life, or simply a nod to former consuls? The mystery remains…
Its water has long been reputed to have diuretic, even aphrodisiac, virtues, contributing to its renown far beyond the Monts de Lacaune. An original and surprising work, not to be missed during a stroll through the historic center!
