In Murat-sur-Vèbre, the Pailhemalbiau statue-menhir seduces with its precise engravings: face, axe, baldric, dagger, belt... One of the most beautiful Neolithic testimonies of the Haut-Languedoc.

Erected in front of a property in the hamlet of Pailhemalbiau, the Pailhemalbiau statue-menhir is one of the best-preserved megaliths in Haut-Languedoc. Carved from a block of reddish Permian sandstone, it stands 2.10 m high and is distinguished by its oval-shaped profile and its rounded, basket-handle top.

Its engravings, of remarkable finesse, reveal a slightly offset stylized face, a baldric whose straps extend onto the back, a belt decorated with chevrons and a plate-buckle, as well as a finely worked pendant-dagger. An axe, perfectly identifiable (undoubtedly one of the most beautiful known representations in the region), completes this ensemble. The joined legs end in carefully detailed feet with elongated toes.

Discovered in 1981 at a place called Grand Camp, on the border of Aveyron, this prehistoric figure was installed in Pailhemalbiau by its discoverer. Classified as a Historic Monument since 2019, it is today an exceptional testimony to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, inviting us to imagine the art and beliefs of the communities of builders who shaped it several millennia ago.
