Erected in front of Lake Laouzas, the Rouyregros statue-menhir impresses with its size and its engravings, offering a rare testimony of the Neolithic in the heart of the Haut-Languedoc.

Discovered in 2005 during plowing near the hamlet of Rouyregros, this imposing granite statue-menhir (2.70 m high by 1.42 m wide, nearly 5 tons) attests to the ingenuity of prehistoric communities. Moved and erected on the heights of La Laouzeto, it now dominates Lake Laouzas, offering a breathtaking panorama where heritage and nature meet.

Listed as a Historic Monument in 2019, it still reveals a rich engraved decoration: a stylized face with eyes and nose, lateral marks evoking tattoos or scarifications, a long-bladed pendant-dagger held by a baldric, as well as a large belt adorned with a raised plate-buckle. The hands and legs, although partially erased by time, remain perceptible and recall the finesse of Saint-Pons megalithic art.

A true stone giant, the Rouyregros statue illustrates the cultural importance of statue-menhirs in Haut-Languedoc. Erected in front of the lake landscapes, it constitutes an essential stop for hikers, megalith enthusiasts, and all those fascinated by the mysteries of Prehistory.
