A vestige of the Neolithic, the Salvergues statue-menhir (in situ copy) is intriguing for its face, its crafted belt, and its stylized engravings. A must-see heritage stop in Haut Languedoc!
On the borders of the L'Espinouse mountains, in the hamlet of Salvergues (Cambon-et-Salvergues), a millennial figure awaits you: the Salvergues statue-menhir. Made from a solid block of granite, this sculpted male statue remains visible on site as a copy, while the fragmented original rests at the Regional Prehistory Museum of Saint Pons de Thomieres.
Dating from the Neolithic period (Rouergat group), it notably features a stylized face (eyes, nose, bulge), arms, dissociated legs, a baldric, as well as an object and a belt with a large buckle decorated with chevrons—all details that testify to the finesse of protohistoric art. Its back, free of engravings, contrasts with a carefully worked face.
This site invites walkers and heritage enthusiasts to a contemplative and educational break, in the heart of a mid-mountain landscape. It's a rewarding experience to discover the silent history of our first sedentary societies.
