Carved from granite, the Couffignet statue-menhir (copy) is intriguing for its clear engravings and its 4 stylized fingers.
On the outskirts of the hamlet of Couffignet, in La Salvetat-sur-Agout, stands a stone silhouette that is far from ordinary... It is a faithful copy of the Couffignet statue-menhir, a masterpiece of Haut-Languedoc Neolithic statuary, whose original is preserved at the Regional Prehistory Museum of Saint-Pons-de-Thomières.
Discovered in 2004 during plowing, this male figure carved from a block of granite grit measures 2.30 m in height and features an engraving of remarkable quality. One can distinguish a stylized face, a baldric, a pendant-dagger, a plate-buckle, a belt, legs... and an intriguing peculiarity: the representation of hands and feet with four fingers. A rare detail in megalithic art, which raises questions about the sculptor's ritual or symbolic intentions.
The statue was carefully reproduced in granite by a local stonemason and installed near its place of discovery, to allow the public to appreciate its lines and symbols in the heart of a preserved rural environment.
