Le Moulin de Nougayrol
The mill was probably built at the beginning of the 19th century. Records mention two mills in Castanet: one located above Mas de l’Église and the other near the Castanet bridge. Both mills appear on the Cassini map.
Today restored, it offers a refreshing stop.

On 25 February 1847, Marie Delort, aged 44 and sister of Catherine, the owner, fell into the river gorge and drowned while opening the water supply. In memory of this tragedy, the gorge is still called “the Woman’s Gorge”.
Several water mills exist in the area. The municipality purchased Nougayrol Mill and restored it identically, as it forms part of the historical heritage. Restoration was supervised by the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park. The building has always been open to the public and the surroundings have been developed. Unfortunately, irresponsible behaviour regularly causes damage to the site.
